Chapter 10

Prophet

“Ma, you have to stop crying. It’s not going to fix it at all.” I held Serenity in my arms and rocked her back and forth. I hated to see her like this. She was a mess and it was all my fault. I wasn’t there when she needed me. I had gotten trapped up in some shit that I wasn’t supposed to be in anyway.

“I can’t stop, Prophet. She out there all alone. Lord knows what they doing to her. She is just a baby!” She almost fell out the chair. Her body rocked hard with grief. I picked her up and sat her back on my lap.

“Baby, please. It’s going to be okay, I promise you that it’s going to be okay,” I told her before I got up and placed her in the chair by herself. “I’m going to get something to drink. You want something?” I asked her.

She shook her head no. I turned around and walked away. I had workers who could go get whatever I needed them to but I needed to clear my head. After the visitor I had today and now this, I needed to get away. When I first came back, I thought I would want this street shit forever but now I was thinking that after Serenity finished school, I would take her and escape to another planet if I had to.

“You look like you don’t know how to pray,” a voice said from behind me.

I turned around and came face to face with a little woman. She had on a nurse uniform and was holding a Bible. I stood back from her. For some reason, I felt uneasy in her presence.

“Never forget to pray. Praying will get you through everything. I know how it seems but look at things through your spiritual eye, not your human one. When it comes to love, protect her like she was the last piece of oxygen you breathe because you never know. She just might be,” she said.

Her voice seemed so familiar but I didn’t know where I knew her from. Before I could say anything to her, she was already gone. I couldn’t have zoned out so hard that I’d imagined a whole woman was there. I shook my head, trying to rattle my thoughts. Maybe the hunger got to me. I need a Snickers or something because I wasn’t myself.

Buzz Buzz Buzz

I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at the number on the screen. I really didn’t want to deal with anymore of the headache that was coming from that person. I pressed the ignore button and kept going with what I was doing. I couldn’t focus on my past when I had chaos in the present. I had so much to deal with. My team was searching the streets for Triveni’s little girl. That shit broke my heart. Whoever took that little girl couldn’t be from Brooklyn. We never pulled no shit like this. Innocents were off limits.
